Dimitri Scarlato is a conductor/composer with a broad experience in classical, operatic and contemporary classic music, at both educational and professional level.
He studied conducting at the prestigious Conservatorio di Musica S.Cecilia in Rome, and has refined his skills by attending several masterclasses in Russia, Germany, Italy and Bulgaria studying with Milen Nachev, Alexander Polyanichko and Riccardo Frizza , focusing on the Ilya Musin conducting technique. He conducted concerts, workshops and recording sessions in Italy, Russia, Bulgaria, Malta, Czech Republic, Slovakia and UK.
His music has been performed in several venues across Europe such as the Barbican Hall and the Cadogan Hall in London and Gran Teatro La Fenice in Venice. The Accademia Filarmonica Romana premiered his opera Fadwa in May 2013 at the Teatro Olimpico in Rome.
His activity spans from contemporary classic music, opera, theatre, films and pop music. In 2011 Dimitri has been selected at VOX3 - Composing for Voice at the Royal Opera House of London, and at the Berlinale Talent Campus 2011 as a film composer.
In 2014 he was the music/conducting coach for Sir Michael Caine on the film Youth, by the Oscar winning director Paolo Sorrentino.
In 2015 he won the 3rd Composition Competition at the International Spring Orchestra Festival, with his piece Caduceo, written for two pianos and had his opera The Christmas Truce premiered at the Teatro Palladium in Rome.
His conducting activity is focussed on premiering new works, such as the final recital of the composition students in Rome at the Conservatorio S.Cecilia (2018/2019). In 2017 he conducted the production of three new operatic works in Bulgaria, and arranged and conducted the string section for the American indie band Queens of the Stone Age at BBC Later with Jools Holland. In 2018 he conducted the closing concert of the International Spring Festival in Malta, with a programme based on Bartok, Lutoslawski and two premieres. He also conducted the 2022 closing concert of the same festival, with a programme involving Xenakis, Gubaidulina, Mahler and two premieres.
In 2019 he has been a member of the jury of the 1st Makris Conducting Competition due to his activity and knowledge as composer/conductor, as it was mandatory for the competitors to conduct works by Andreas Makris, a 20th century Greek-American composer. In 2022 he conducted Don Giovanni at the Italian Culture Institute in London. He is also an experienced session conductor, having led recording sessions at the Angel Studios in London and the Forum Studios in Rome among others.
